Ian Turner, the Great Britain men's chief coach, is to leave the High Performance Centre at Bath where he has been in charge for the past seven years and take over the role as England Head Coach based at Loughborough University.
This move has been brought about so Turner can work more closely with and give support to the National Performance Director, Bill Sweetenham, who wants to spend more time on the poolside between now and the Athens Olympic Games.
Sweetenham wants all coaches to spend at least 30 hours a week on the poolside and will set the example by doing so himself. To do this Sweetenham needs back-up which he believes Turner will provide.
By placing Turner at Loughborough, the national centre, it will give the much-needed long course opportunities for swimmers whether it be on a temporary or permanent basis. Sweetenham wants all the top swimmers to have the opportunity to train in a 50 metre facility.
Sweetenham is eager to encourage, promote and challenge British coaches and by moving Turner to Loughborough it opens the door for another coach to experience the challenges at a performance centre.
Sweetenham challenges the swimmer and himself. During the next year he wants to promote the club structure to allow coaches to spend more time on the pool deck.
