Swimming events ended Saturday, Aug 16 in Santo Domingo at the 13th Pan American Games. The USA dominated with 46 (21-17-8) total medals up from 37 four year ago. Brazil with 21 (3-6-12) improved on their 1999 tota of 12.
Canada with a B-Team dropped from 31 to 12 total (2-4-6).
On the final day of competition, George Bovell (TRI) won the 200 IM in a Games record of 1:59.49, as he won four medals during the week including a gold in the 200 freestyle.
Ricrado Monasterio (VEN) added a win in the 1500 freestyle with 15:16.98 to his 400 free gold earlier.
The USA won the final relay the men's 4x100 medley in a Games reord of 3:37.27, with Brazil edging Canada by 10/100ths for second.
Karalynn Joyce (USA) won the 50 free in a Games record of 25.24, with Flavia Delaroli (BRA) in second 25.44 and 1999 silver medallist Eileen Coparropa (PAN) in third with 25.62.
A one-two sweep in the 200 backstroke with Jamie Reid (USA) first in 2;13.89 and Diana MacManus (USA) second in 2:15.39 and Gisela Morales (GUA) winning her second bronze in 2:16.19.
Audrey Lacroix (CAN) won the 200 fly in 2:11.02 under the FINA Olympic standard with Noelle Bassi (USA) second in 2:12,81 and Dana Kirk (USA) third in 2:12.85.
20 Games records were established in 14 events.
Canada brought 421 athletes to Santo Domingo compared to 618 in 1999 when the Games were held in Winnipeg. With many of the country's best skipping the Pan Ams, the question of relevance of the Pan Ams is again an issue. And Canadian Team Leader Gene Sutton expressed concern that the Pan Ams have turned into a development Games.
