British Short Course Championships - Day Two

WOMEN 800M FREESTYLE
The 800m freestyle was a revenge match between Britain's Becky Cooke and Brittany Reimer of Canada. At the recent World Championships the duo finished third and fourth respectively. Fifteen-year old Reimer tried to shake off her British rival but Cooke was having none of it and by the 300m mark was moving in front. Cooke was straight back in training on her return for the World Student Games. The twenty-year old soon was ploughing a lonely furrow as she came home in a British record of 8min 19;82sec shaving 1;65sec off the record she established two years ago. Afterwards Cooke claimed "I set the record some time ago so it's about time I lowered it" adding "It gave me a lot of confidence winning the bronze at the World Championbships and it's great to be swimming so well".

MEN'S 400M MEDLEY
The 400m Medley proved to be as exciting as the 200m the previous day. Gregor Tait was inches ahead at the end of the opening butterfly leg. The twenty-four year old then used his powerful backstroke which won him silver in the 200m distances at last year's Commonwealth Games, to pull ahead of the rest of the field. But his down fall was the breaststroke

Francis admitted "That felt really hard. I've been finding it difficult to find my form in the medley recently. That really didn't feel like a 4min 08".

WOMEN'S 200M BREASTSTROKE
A personal best and Scottish record in the morning heats for Kirtsy Balfour and the nineteen year old from Edinburgh set out in determined mood searching for her second record of the day. Amy Konowalik tried in vain to match her Scottish rival but Balfour didn't like company and forged ahead to lower her morning time by 0;93sec to 2min 26;14.

A some hat disappointed Balfour claimed afterwards "I was hoping to get the British record tonight but it wasn't to be. I'm happy with the Scottish record, but maybe I can have another go at the Europeans (short course) now I've qualified".

MEN'S 100M BREASTSTROKE
After James Gibson set a Commonwealth record in the semi-final the 100m breaststroke was an eagerly awaited for final. Gibbo made his usual fats start but hard on his heels were Chris Cook the former record holder, and Darren Mew a finalist in Barcelona and lurking in the wings was the world 200m silver medallist Ian Edmond. In the final surge for home Mew snatched the top honours in 58;68sec with Gibson second in 58;89. Cook just managed to hang on to third spot in 59;12 600ths ahead od Edmond who like Mew set a personal.

Mew said after "I was sorry to be out of the smei final yesterday where the Commonwealth record went".

WOMEN'S 100M FREESTYLE
Karen Pickering and Alison Sheppard aged 31 and 30 respectively showed their younger rivals the way home. Sheppard stormed out ahead but could not hold off the final charge of Pickering the 1994 Commonwealth champion, who collected the title she first won back in 1988 in 54;00sec with Sheppard just 800th behind. Australia's Louise Tomlinson came home third in 55;10.

Pickering said "I really wanted to go under 545 so zero zero really hurt. That's the fastest I've been so I'm delighted with that. It was all about winning the race and that's what I've done".

WOMEN'S 100M BACKSTROKE
Katy Sexton the world 200m backstroke champion had found it " a bit of an anti-climax after the worlds" but she still found enough determination to out pace the double Commonwealth champion in the 100m distance. Sexton moved ahead on the final 25m to win in a time of 59;47sec 0;53sec ahead.

Sexton who dose not like short course swimming as "the turns come too quickly". Admitted, "I wasn't feeling so good yesterday so I'm a lot happier with that swim. That's a best time for me and it's been difficult but I came here to qualify for the Europeans and I've done that, so that's all that matters".

MEN'S 100M BUTTERFLY
James Hickman and Stephen Parry dead heated in the 100m butterfly with a time of 52;52sec. Unusually it was Parry who led with Hickman having to close the gap.

MEN 50M BACKSTROKE
Matthew Clay surprised his rivals to win the 50m backstroke in a british record time of 24;54sec finishing 0;33 ahead of the Commonwealth 200m champion, James Goddard. Third place went to the European junior champion Liam Tancock in 25;18sec.

Clay admitted "I was surprised by that, but I knew to win that race it'd take a British record. It's great to have Neil Willey's record. I grew up thinking he was the boy and looked up to him, so to take his record ius amazing for me".

WOMEN'S 50M BUTTERFLY
Ros Brett was happy to a last lower her two year old British record for the 50m butterfly. Her time of 26;74sec was a mere 100th faster than her previous best "I'm pleased by that" claimed Brett.
