Jensen & Keller Win the 800m Free on Day 1 of US Nationals

COLLEGE PARK, MD - A number of swimmers from the World Championships decided to sit this one out. And most of the Pan American Games team has already shipped out to Santo Domingo.

But if anyone thought that meant the 2003 ConocoPhillips Summer National Championships would be a slow meet, they forgot to tell that to Larsen Jensen.

Jensen, 17, of Mission Viejo (Calif.), swam the ninth-fastest time in the world Tuesday night in the 800m free with a time of 7:57.35. This just about two weeks after setting the American record (7:48.09) and winning the silver medal in that event at the FINA World Championships.

Jensen took an early lead at the 100-meter mark that only widened as the race went on. It was his second national title.

"It's hard to do a distance race on a double taper, but I'm pleased with what I did," Jensen said. "I just wanted to come in here and wrack up some national titles and show people it doesn't end for me at World Championships."

Kalyn Keller, 18, of Trojan Swim Club won the women's race with a time of 8:31.54. Keller crept up on teammate Kaitlin Sandeno and took the lead with 150 meters to go.

It was her second national title, after winning her first in the same event in 2001.

"I was really excited about it," Keller said. "I haven't won Nationals in a while, and it's good to be back on top again."
